AI answer engines compared: how each one actually retrieves

Six surfaces, and the differences that change what you do. Whether each retrieves live, whether it cites, how fast it updates, and which crawler it reads you with.

What each difference means

How to use each one

01
Google AI Overviews

Classic SEO health decides eligibility. There is no separate AI ranking to optimise for.

02
Google AI Mode

Fan-out means content answering adjacent subtopics can surface even when the head term does not.

03
Perplexity

The best early warning system. If a placement worked, this shows it first.

04
ChatGPT

Largest audience and the answer a customer quotes back at you. Slowest to correct.

05
Google Gemini

Google-Extended controls training use and does not affect Search ranking.

06
Microsoft Copilot

Often ignored in Indian planning, and it inherits whatever your Bing presence already is.

The practical rule

Measure four, prioritise by one, judge by another

Scan all four of ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews weekly, because the answers genuinely diverge and a two engine scan gives a misleading picture.

Prioritise fixes by what Perplexity shows, because it retrieves on every answer and confirms within weeks whether a source placement worked.

Judge commercial progress by ChatGPT and AI Overviews, because that is where the volume is and where a customer actually encounters you.

One thing that trips people up: a brand strong on Perplexity and absent on ChatGPT usually has good published content and a weak entity. Retrieval based surfaces pick up new material quickly; memory based answers lag until the public record about you is consistent enough to override them.

FAQs

Answer engines: common questions

Which engine matters most for an Indian brand?

ChatGPT for volume, AI Overviews for reach on Google surfaces, Perplexity as the instrument that tells you whether your work landed.

Do I need to optimise separately for each?

No. The underlying work is the same. The sequencing differs because retrieval based surfaces confirm progress first.

Does blocking Google-Extended hurt my rankings?

No. It governs training and Gemini use. Search ranking and AI Overviews eligibility are governed by Googlebot.

Why is Copilot usually left out of Indian planning?

Habit rather than reasoning. It inherits your Bing presence, which for most Indian brands is unmanaged and therefore cheap to improve.
