Observed data

Who actually ranks when an Indian buyer asks which brand to buy

A live teardown of one category buying query in India, observed 2 September 2026. Four of the top nine results are brands ranking lists of brands. One is a four year old Reddit thread. An AI Overview sits above all of it.

The query

best skin care brands in india

1,300 searches a month in India, cost per click 0.22 US dollars, advertiser competition rated high, commercial intent. SERP features present: AI Overview, People Also Ask, related searches.

What it shows

Five things worth taking from this

01
Brands rank lists of brands, including themselves

Four of the nine are brand-owned blog posts ranking their own category. Deyga, The Derma Co, Typsy Beauty and Dr Rashel all publish a top ten and appear in it. This is the single most repeatable tactic on this page and almost nobody in Indian D2C does it deliberately.

02
A community thread outranks most brands

A Reddit thread from several years ago sits at position three. It has no schema, no author, no optimisation. It has real people answering the exact question, which is what both the ranking system and the retrieval layer are looking for.

03
Marketplaces occupy the middle

Amazon and Nykaa hold two of the nine with plain category pages. A brand competing here is competing for the remaining slots, not all nine.

04
An AI Overview sits above every one of them

On a query with clear commercial intent and high advertiser competition. Whatever these nine pages earn in clicks, they earn it after a generated summary has already answered the question.

05
The lists name global brands as often as Indian ones

The dermatologist list at position five leads with Cetaphil and CeraVe. If your prompt set only measures Indian competitors, you are measuring half the field.

What to do with it

Three moves this suggests

  • Publish an honest category list on your own site, including competitors, with a stated basis for the ranking. Four of the nine results here are exactly that, and a list that includes rivals is more citable than one that does not.
  • Show up in the community threads your category already has, honestly and under your own name. Not astroturfing, which gets detected and removed.
  • Run the teardown yourself on your own top five buying queries before you write anything. The composition differs by category and it decides where the work goes.
Limits

What this does not claim

  • One query, one country, one observation on one date. Positions move daily and personalisation varies results.
  • It shows organic composition, not traffic. A position is not a click, particularly under an AI Overview.
  • It says nothing about which of these the AI Overview actually cited. That needs a separate check, which is what a prompt scan does.
  • Advertiser competition rated high describes the paid auction, not organic difficulty.

FAQs

The teardown: common questions

Can I reuse this teardown?

Yes, with attribution and a link. The underlying SERP is public; the analysis is ours.

Why this query?

It is a clean category buying question with commercial intent, high advertiser competition and an AI Overview present. That combination is what most Indian D2C brands are actually competing in.

Will the results look the same if I search now?

The order will differ. The composition, meaning brand listicles plus community plus marketplaces, is the stable part and it is the point.

How do I run this for my category?

Search your top buying query, record the top ten by type rather than by name, and note which SERP features are present. It takes ten minutes and it changes what you write next.
