AI Overviews explained

An AI Overview is assembled at query time. Google retrieves a set of pages, generates a summary grounded in them, and shows a small number of source links. If your page is not in that retrieved set, you are absent from the most valuable space on the page even when you rank first below it.

For Indian brands the visible effect is a traffic drop with flat rankings. Informational queries lose clicks first, then comparison queries. Transactional queries hold up longest. If your analytics show impressions steady and clicks falling on the same keywords, AI Overviews is usually the reason.

Recovery is not about fighting the feature. It is about being one of the cited sources inside it, and about shifting content investment towards queries where a summary cannot replace the page, such as pricing, configuration, comparison and anything that needs your own data.

AI Overviews is the Google feature that places a generated summary with linked sources at the top of the results page, above the traditional links.

One definition is worth more than ten opinions

Every term here links to the service that owns the work and the tool that measures it.

Check it yourself

Three things you can test this week

None of these need a tool or a vendor. They take an afternoon and they tell you whether ai overviews is actually your problem.

01
In Search Console, filter to informational queries and compare click-through rate across the last two quarters with position held constant.
02
Search ten of those queries manually and record whether an overview appears and who is cited.
03
Separate branded from non-branded before you conclude anything. Branded traffic is rarely affected and will mask the loss.

Our own measurement method, with its definitions and stated limits, is published on the method page.

How we work

The definition is the easy part

Knowing what a term means takes five minutes. Knowing whether it is your problem takes an afternoon, and knowing what to do about it takes a method.

Every glossary page here ends with three checks you can run yourself and the primary sources behind them, because a definition you cannot act on is trivia.

FAQs

AI Overviews: common questions

Can you opt out of AI Overviews?

Only by blocking Google from using the page for generation, which usually costs more traffic than it saves. The practical path is to become a cited source.

Which queries trigger AI Overviews most in India?

Informational and comparison queries, health and finance queries with caveats, and long-tail how-to phrasing. Branded and checkout-intent queries trigger them least.

How do you measure the damage?

Compare click-through rate by query group in Search Console across the period before and after rollout, holding position constant. The gap between stable impressions and falling clicks is the size of the problem.
