Find the sources the engines actually read, then target those
Coverage that no engine retrieves does nothing for AI visibility. Here is how to build a media list from your own scan instead of a wish list.

Source authority is topical, not domain-wide
A niche Indian trade publication can outweigh a large generic site on a category question, because the retrieval step is topical. Community sources punch far above their weight for product opinions, which is why threads keep appearing in answers about what to buy.
This makes domain rating a poor proxy. What matters is whether that source already appears in the answers for your category.
Building the list from a citation gap
Run your prompt set. For every prompt where a competitor is named and you are not, record the source the engine cited. Cluster those sources. In most Indian D2C categories the gap concentrates in three or four sources rather than spreading across fifty, which makes closing it a finite project.
That cluster is your media plan. Not the publications your PR agency has relationships with.
- Run the prompt set
- Log the cited source per answer
- Cluster and rank by frequency
- Target in order
What placement is worth and what it is not
Sponsored and syndicated placements are often weighted down and rarely carry the independence signal that matters. Community participation works when it is honest and gets detected and removed when it is not.
The measurable outcome is not the clipping. It is the answer changing on a prompt you were already tracking, usually two to four weeks after the source goes live.
