01

What generative engine optimization actually means

Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of getting a brand named, quoted or linked inside the answer an AI engine writes, rather than inside the list of links below it. The engines that matter in India are ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.

The shift is not that people stopped searching. It is that the search result increasingly answers the question instead of pointing at pages that answer it. When a buyer asks which brand to choose, the model returns three or four names. If yours is not among them, the rest of your marketing never gets a turn.

02

Why the search volume is small and the stakes are not

In India, generative engine optimization draws roughly 2,400 searches a month. Answer engine optimization draws about 1,300. Meanwhile seo agency in india draws close to 9,900. Anyone telling you GEO is a huge search category is selling something.

The value is not in the category term. It is in the category prompts your buyers type into a chat window, which do not appear in a keyword tool at all because they are not typed into Google. A brand can own a term with no search volume and still get named on the questions that decide purchases.

  • Category demand for the term is small and growing slowly
  • Buyer demand sits in the prompts, not the keyword
  • The head terms with real volume are still the classic SEO ones
03

The three pieces of work

Entity clarity comes first. If four engines give four different answers to who the company is, nothing downstream is stable. That means one canonical name and description, Organization and Product schema, and consistent details on every profile you control.

Then content an engine can lift: one question per heading, the answer in the first fifty words, self-contained blocks, a date and a named author.

Then source placement. Category prompts are usually answered from a short list of sources: category publications, comparison pages, marketplaces, and community threads. Getting onto that list is most of the work and most of the cost.

  • Entity: make the brand legible
  • Content: make it liftable
  • Sources: get on the list engines read
04

How it is measured

With a fixed prompt set. Forty buying questions, run weekly across four engines, recording whether the brand appears, where in the answer, and which source the engine used. That produces a share of voice number that moves and can be compared against named competitors.

One check proves nothing. The same prompt returns different brands on different days, from different accounts and regions. Judge on a rolling four-week average.

05

What it costs and when it pays back

In India this work sits in the Rs 75,000 to 2 lakh per month band, with full programmes starting at Rs 1,50,000. An audit alone is Rs 25,000.

Brand prompts, meaning questions that name you, usually correct inside sixty days. Category prompts, the ones that do not name you, move between day sixty and day one hundred twenty depending on how much source placement is required.

Google's own position is worth reading before buying GEO from anyone: it states that no special optimisation is required to appear in AI features, and that the fundamentals still decide it.

FAQs

What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?: common questions

Is GEO different from SEO?

Yes in target, overlapping in method. SEO optimises for a ranked list of links. GEO optimises for inclusion inside a written answer. Clean crawlable pages and schema serve both, but GEO adds prompt-level measurement, entity work and off-site source placement.

How much search volume does GEO have in India?

About 2,400 a month for the term itself as of September 2026, with related terms in the tens to low hundreds. The category term is small. The buyer prompts it describes are not measured by keyword tools at all.

Can we do GEO in-house?

The on-site half yes, if you have a content owner and a developer with template access. The source placement and the weekly measurement are where in-house attempts usually stall.
